Peaceful lakeside view at dawn

Born from the Shoreline

Fern-crane began in 2014 when a small group of naturalists, former park rangers, and outdoor enthusiasts decided that the Great Lakes deserved more than a passing glance from a car window.

Growing up along these shores, we watched countless visitors drive past, unaware of the hidden coves, the ancient rock formations, the quiet trails where herons fish at dawn. We knew these places intimately, and we wanted to share them.

What started as informal walks for friends became something larger. Word spread. People came from across Canada and beyond, looking for a different way to experience the lakes — slower, deeper, more meaningful.

What Sets Us Apart

Our approach to walking the Great Lakes

Local Knowledge

Every guide on our team has lived within sight of the Great Lakes for at least a decade. They know the tides, the weather patterns, the spots where eagles nest and where the best sunset views hide. This is not knowledge from a guidebook — it is learned from years of walking these shores in every season.

Small Groups

We cap every walk at twelve participants. This is not a business decision — it is a philosophical one. The Great Lakes demand quiet attention. A smaller group moves more slowly, notices more, disturbs less. It also means every person gets genuine engagement with our guides.

Ecological Respect

We follow leave-no-trace principles not as a rule but as a value. Our routes are designed to minimize impact on sensitive ecosystems. We adjust schedules around nesting seasons, avoid fragile dune areas during vulnerable periods, and actively contribute to shoreline conservation efforts.

Team of guides on a lakeside trail

Our Team

Our guides come from diverse backgrounds — retired wildlife biologists, former park wardens, Indigenous knowledge keepers, marine ecologists, and lifelong outdoors enthusiasts. What unites them is a deep connection to the Great Lakes and an ability to share that connection with others.

Each guide undergoes extensive training in wilderness first aid, ecological interpretation, and group leadership. But more importantly, they bring a genuine love for these landscapes that no training can teach.

When you walk with Fern-crane, you are not following a tour script. You are walking with someone who has spent countless hours on these shores and wants nothing more than to help you see them as they do.

Our Commitment

The Great Lakes face real challenges — climate change, invasive species, pollution, overdevelopment. We believe that people protect what they love, and they love what they know. Every walk we lead is an opportunity to deepen that connection.

A portion of every booking goes to shoreline conservation projects. We partner with local environmental organizations and Indigenous communities working to protect these waters for future generations.

When you walk with us, you become part of that mission. Welcome to Fern-crane.
